About Dr. Patrick J. Lavery…

Patrick J. Lavery started his mental health career in the early 1970s while serving in the United States Air Force as a psychiatric technician. Assigned to several in and out-patient units in military hospitals around the United States and Europe, he worked as part of multidisciplinary teams specializing in the treatment of active duty military personnel suffering with severe mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders. In the mid 80s, Dr. Lavery was a School Psychologist for the Houston Independent School District serving as a crisis intervention specialist for school aged children. As a psychologist in private practice for 13 years, Dr. Lavery has specialized in providing neuropsychological and personality assessments to hospitals and forensic clients, including providing new-hire police screenings. In the late 1990s, he was an in-house psychologist for the Houston Police Department providing evaluation services as well as out-patient and on-site crisis intervention treatment to police officers and their families.

Dr. Lavery has been a Texas licensed psychologist since 1986 and has over 25 years of psychological assessment experience. He has performed over 2500 diagnostic evaluations for psychiatric hospitals, treating physicians, child welfare agencies, and school districts; and, over 500 neuropsychological assessments for rehabilitation hospitals and various litigation participants. As a police psychologist he has performed over 2000 new recruit evaluations and Fitness-for-Duty assessments. As a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) certified instructor, he developed and taught classes for police cadets and in-service training for officers at the Houston Police Academy in the following areas: De-escalation of Violent Offenders, Understanding and Managing Emotional Trauma, and Abnormal Psychology for Law Enforcement Personnel.

He is a member of the American Psychological Association, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and a corporate member of the Texas Police Chiefs Association.

Dr. Lavery and his wife have been married for 28 years and they make their home in the Houston area. They have two grown sons.
